A quick explanation of the project (which is also in the book)
On the 15th of April 2013 a bomb exploded at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring hundreds of others. It was a terrible crime. Like others at the time, I noticed that there was a significant difference in our news media between the way they reported on this appalling event and others that were happening daily at that time in Iraq and Afghanistan. When victims were from those counties they were not even named. The date, the location and type of bomb, and the tally of fatalities was all that was reported. It seemed that there was no invitation to care about the people who had died.
I wasn’t a writer at that time. I started what I thought of as an art project. I decided to write portraits, in real time, to fill out the lives behind the numbers. I thought that, though the person I outlined in the portraits was invented, it might make it easier to understand that they had a valuable life, loved ones, hopes and dreams, just like the people who died that day in Boston.
Do let me know what you think.
All the best, Lulu
