Caught a Rumer

Vicious Rumer by Josh Winning is about to be published by Unbound. If you like your thrillers dark and oozing from the underground, I recommend you get hold of a copy. But be careful – she bites.

I was so intrigued by Rumer Cross that I went Full Sweeney and hauled her in for questioning.

If you want to know how Rumer found herself in this predicament, who Tashaun/Troll and Pearl are and just why Rumer’s dead mother is such a force to be reckoned with, even twenty years dead, you can find out by getting a copy of the book.

DI Sweet enters the small interview room.
So… (consults notes) Rumer. I am going to try and help you here, but you have to be straight with me. Why did you push Tashaun Mason off the wall?

Rumer Cross
That what the others told you?

DI Sweet
Never mind who told me. You are in a very serious predicament, young lady and it would be best for you if you co-operated.

Rumer Cross [says nothing]

DI Sweet
I see, playing it this way are we? I’ve got time. And the cell is right where it was when you were pulled out of it. You can go back in if you want?

Rumer Cross
Why not? Makes no difference to me. That’s where you want me anyway.

DI Sweet
Don’t flatter yourself. There is a body, the body of your friend, apparently. What I want is to know what happened, to know why you pushed him so I can wrap this case up and go home for my tea.

Rumer Cross
He slipped. We were running. OK? I didn’t fucking push him.

DI Sweet
I have three credible witnesses who tell me you attacked them and then pushed him.
Look, I know how it goes, your friend sided with them and you lost it. You were in a fit of rage, you didn’t mean to kill him…

Rumer Cross
Let me guess, you spoke to Lola. [curt laugh] She must be loving this. Been looking for a reason to screw me over for months.

But I didn’t fucking push him.

DI Sweet
Why would a nice girl like Lola want to screw you over? She’s really upset by all this, right mess, crying her eyes out.

Rumer Cross
I’ll bet. You asked her about her parents yet? How she gets those bruises?

DI Sweet
We’re not here to talk about Lola’s bruises. Let me remind you that we are here to talk about Tashaun Mason’s bruises, which are of a significantly more pressing nature, as they killed him. So start talking!

Rumer Cross
Your bedside manner could use work. Christ. Look, they’re all lying. They say I pushed him? Fuck them. They hate me. Of course they’d say that. They’d love it if I got the blame for this. But it was an… accident. It was… an accident.

DI Sweet
We found spray paint in your pocket, the same type that was used on a grave stone, your mother’s grave stone, as it happens. Now, we all understand, it’s emotional losing a beloved parent –

Rumer Cross
What’s that got to do with this?!

DI Sweet
– quite understandably, you have struggled a little, losing your mum. And perhaps Pearl Truman was a little insensitive. You were rattled, you got angry. Tashaun, or Troll, as you like – liked – to call him, tried to calm you down, told you not to be so horrible to Pearl, and you saw red.

Rumer Cross
Pearl insensitive? Ha! You’ve definitely met her.
Troll was my friend. My only fucking friend, OK? I wouldn’t hurt him… Not… [she stops talking and looks guilty]

DI Sweet
So – let’s say it was an accident. You were upset. I understand. You didn’t mean to kill him.

Rumer Cross
I didn’t… I didn’t mean to… I didn’t push him, OK? That’s what you asked. And I didn’t push him. It was a horrible accident. Ask them again. Or find somebody from the scrap yard, they must have seen, too. Troll slipped. End of.

When do I get out of here?

DI Sweet
The scrap yard? Well you might be lucky, if there was someone there. I will of course be checking. But [turning nasty] you’d better be fucking lucky. I know you, because I know your family. You killed that boy, and I am going to put you away.

Rumer Cross
You’re all the same. Congrats, you’ve done your homework, but my… Celene Cross has been dead for 20 years. I never even met her! You think I WANT to be her kid? Those things she did… I’m nothing like her. Nothing. No matter what your little file says or what your over-caffeinated gut is telling you. I’m. Not. Her. And what happened to Troll was an accident. So unless you have proper proof that I pushed him over that wall and left him to die in a fucking scrap heap, you need to back. The fuck. Off. And let me out of here.

DI Sweet
Take her back to the cells!

[one hour later…]

Rumer Cross
Finally.

DI Sweet
Alright. You got lucky this time. The yard came up trumps. But watch yourself. Watch yourself very carefully. Because I will be watching you too. Now get out of here.

Rumer Cross
Good luck with that.

As you can see, Rumer is the kind who always gets the last word…. It’s a cracking read, I recommend it. Now get out of my way, slags. This is Detective Inspector Sweet, signing off and heading home for his tea.
